We
are particularly excited about our partnership this year
with Horizon Milling, a Cargill subsidiary in Rush
City. Six employees stepped forward to volunteer as
literacy tutors for the Minnesota Reading Corps program,
and they were trained last fall at CE Jacobson
Elementary School in Rush City. These Horizon Milling
volunteers tutor students five days a week, taking turns
going to school at the same time each day to work with
Grade 3 students. |

This
partnership is a model for other local
business/Minnesota Reading Corps partnerships, and we
are thankful for the leadership of Mike Ginal at Horizon
Milling, and Melanie Hedberg, the Minnesota Reading
Corps member at CE Jacobson this school year. Melanie
describes the partnership with enthusiasm: “It is so
exciting for me to be part of this adventure, to be
considered on the cutting edge of a partnership between
the community (Horizon Milling) and improving the
literacy of students at Jacobson
Elementary school.
The volunteers are ALL wonderful! It has been a pleasure
for me to work with each one of them. I can tell they
are excited about working with students along with their
team spirit at Horizon Milling. It is an honor to be a
part of this process.”
