What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is an opportunity to make a big difference in your life and in the lives of those around you. It’s a chance to apply your skills and ideals toward helping others and meeting critical needs in the community.
Also known as the domestic Peace Corps, AmeriCorps provides opportunities for 75,000 Americans to give back in an intensive way to their communities and country each year. Since its creation in 1994, more than half a billion Americans have served their country and communities through the AmeriCorps program. Members from all backgrounds and many stages of life can apply to be an AmeriCorps member – from college grads to people transitioning careers to retirees. Applicants participate in a highly competitive selection process to serve with local or national nonprofits.
What Do AmeriCorps Members Do?
People who join AmeriCorps (called “members”) provide direct service in the areas of education, human needs, public safety, environment, or homeland security. Here in Minnesota, there are hundreds of opportunities to give involved. Whether your service makes a community safer, gives a child a second chance, or helps protect the environment, you’ll be getting things done through AmeriCorps!
AmeriCorps members do a wide range of things – they address critical needs in communities all across America and right here at home. They also recruit, train and supervise community volunteers to extend and complement their community efforts.
As an AmeriCorps member, you can:
- Help children learn how to read
- Tutor and mentor disadvantaged youth
- Build affordable housing
- Teach computer skills
- Clean parks and streams
- Manage or operate after-school programs
- Build organizational capacity
- And much more!
Who Can Join AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps members must be at least 17 years old and a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien. People of all backgrounds are welcome to apply; education requirements vary by program.
