The mission of the City of Lakes AmeriCorps Program is to help ensure all our children succeed both socially and academically regardless of race, culture, ethnicity, native language, gender, poverty level, disability, or any other status.
Our goal is to help English Language Learners in the middle grades gain Academic English proficiency. City of Lakes members are placed in the Minneapolis Public Schools to provide tutoring for these students as well as engage them through enrichment programming, technology integration and service learning practices.

Essential qualifications to participate in City of Lakes AmeriCorps:

  • Two full time years of college or the equivalent, such as an associate's degree or 60 semester credits

  • Meet state standards in reading and math; tutor students in reading and possibly other subjects; read out loud with students; perform light physical activities with youth
  • Use online databases; meet deadlines; attend all Corps events; maintain set schedule at site

Top reasons that members like serving in City of Lakes AmeriCorps:

  • Career Exploration: Many members join the program wanting to be teachers or youth workers. This program provides a variety of opportunities to explore these interests and gain valuable experience in the public school setting. Members also receive high-quality pre-service and ongoing training in a variety of youth-related topics.
  • Diverse Populations: Members have the opportunity to work with diverse student populations in schools throughout Minneapolis. Members work primarily with English Language Learners and students in poverty.
  • National Movement: Members join because they want to be a part of something larger than themselves. AmeriCorps is a nationally recognized program that allows them to serve in local communities here and across the country.

Full time positions are mainly available; part time positions are very limited.
