Minnesota and beyond: Reaching more than 40,000 students

Nationally, only 36% of fourth graders read at or above a proficient level (NAEP), meaning nearly two-thirds of students did not finish third grade with essential reading skills. Reading by third grade marks a critical transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn,” and students who do not reach proficiency will continue to struggle as they progress through school.

Reading Corps has the power to change the academic trajectory of struggling readers across the country. It blends the people power of AmeriCorps with the science of how children learn to read. External evaluations have shown that Reading Corps can work for all students and in all settings – urban, suburban, and rural.

In 2012, ServeMinnesota received funding from Target to replicate Reading Corps in Colorado and Washington, D.C. Since then, the program has expanded to California, Massachusetts, Michigan, Iowa, North Dakota, Missouri, Florida, and Wisconsin. ServeMinnesota provides technical assistance and training to support the replication of Reading Corps.

Math Corps builds on the success of Reading Corps to address the critical need to strengthen math skills among students in grades 4-8. Like Reading Corps, Math Corps has seen consistent growth. Starting with an initial cohort of just 100 students, Math Corps has since helped more than 20,000 students master fundamental math skills and lay a foundation for high school algebra, higher education, and 21st century STEM careers. Math Corps is replicated in Georgia and Michigan.
