Committing to a service year with AmeriCorps can be a defining decision no matter why you make it.
It’s a year that does not ask you to have everything figured out. Instead, it gives you the chance to show up, get involved, and learn by doing while contributing to work that genuinely matters in communities across Minnesota.
For some members, service is a bridge into college or a career. For others, it’s a way to reset direction, build confidence, or turn a sense of purpose into action. For everyone, it is real work with real impact and a year that often shapes what comes next more than you might expect.
Here are eight reasons to consider signing up:
1. Find direction through real experience
AmeriCorps gives you space and time to consider what you value and what you enjoy. Service opportunities are available all over the state, with options that range from environmental projects to working with students of all ages. Just as important, a service year can help you figure out what you do not want to do. You might think you want to teach younger students, but realize after serving in an elementary school, you are more interested in middle school education instead.
2. Make an impact you can actually see
School can be a hyper-scheduled, high-pressure time that makes it hard to prioritize volunteering and service. Taking a year after you graduate to join AmeriCorps offers a chance to give back in a meaningful way.
3. Earn money for education or loans
AmeriCorps members receive an education award up to $6,895 to pay tuition or repay student loans. for each term of service. This award can be used to pay for college or student loans. Some colleges and universities will even match the award, increasing its value.
4. Step into real-world professional experience
AmeriCorps service typically takes place within a nonprofit organization, government agency, public institution, or school. If you’ve had limited experience in a professional setting, AmeriCorps offers a true introduction to the “real world,” along with on-the-job training. Program managers and organizational leaders often provide mentorship and other tools, that can help you see what your future career could look like.
5. Access to benefits
In addition to a regular paycheck every two weeks, AmeriCorps members receive a number of other benefits. With the rising cost of health care and housing, a service year can be more affordable than many other options. Members who serve 35 hours a week or more receive individual health care benefits, and AmeriCorps pays the entire monthly premium. You may be able to live at home and serve within commuting distance, with opportunities available across Minnesota. National programs like AmeriCorps NCCC may also cover travel and housing during service. See our FAQs for more benefits information.
6. Find a service schedule that fits your life
An AmeriCorps service year doesn’t have to look one specific way. Many programs offer flexible schedules, including 18-, 25-, and 35-hour positions, making it possible to serve while balancing school, family, or other responsibilities.
For parents, serving can be an especially meaningful fit. Many education programs follow the same schedule as local schools, and some members even serve in the same school their child attends. Whether you’re looking to stay connected to your community, build new skills, or re-enter the workforce, service can fit into many different stages of life.
7. Strengthen your resume
AmeriCorps strengthens both college applications and resumes. It’s a great way to re-enter the workforce or transition your career. In addition to building real skills and experience, it shows a commitment to service and community. That combination stands out.
8. Experience something new and different
A service year offers the chance to explore new places and experiences, even close to home. It can be an opportunity to step outside your usual routine and gain new skills.
